About Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity (GLHFH)
GLHFH works to reduce substandard housing in Lycoming County by building workforce housing (decent, affordable homes) for working low-income families using donated resources in a manner which increases family stability, self-sufficiency, empowerment, devotion to work ethic through the sweat equity requirement and raises the level of civic pride within the affected neighborhoods. Habitat families work with volunteers not only to build houses, but to build strong relationships as well.

GLHFH is based in Williamsport, but serves the entire Lycoming county area. We have dedicated and completed a total of 36 homes in Williamsport, East Lycoming, Montgomery and Jersey Shore area since 1989. Plans are scheduled to begin construction on 5 new energy efficient homes in Newberry within the City of Williamsport in June with completion by fall 2009.

Habitat homes are sold at no profit to partner families and financed with no-interest mortgages. Families are chosen for the need of adequate shelter, ability to pay a mortgage and the willingness to partner. Homeowner families are required to invest “sweat equity” labor hours in the construction of their homes. Construction costs are kept low through donations from individuals, corporations, churches and foundations; and through the use of volunteer labor. For more information, visit www.lycominghabitat.org.

GLHFH is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, an ecumenical Christian ministry that welcomes to its mission all people dedicated to the cause of eliminating substandard housing. Since is founding in Americus, Ga., in 1976, Habitat has built more than 225,000 houses in nearly 100 countries, providing simple, decent and affordable shelter for more than 1 million people. Every 21 minutes, Habitat completes another house somewhere in the world, becoming the 17th largest home builder in the U.S. For more information, visit www.habitat.org.

The local affiliate has also successfully changed its name from Williamsport/Lycoming Habitat for Humanity to Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity (GLHFH). This name change occurred due to the projected initiatives of the local affiliate for expanding growth into surrounding counties and communities. The Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity (GLHFH) is strongly committed to the Williamsport area but continues to look for opportunities to serve families in surrounding communities where they are able to help eliminate substandard housing.
