In honor of World Habitat Day on October 3rd, Greater Lycoming Habitat will be celebrating with a week-long Building Community Event October 1st-9th.  Here's how you can be involved:

Advocate - Raise awareness about the need for decent affordable shelter and clean neighborhoods!

1. Particpate in the World Habitat Day Photo Petition.  Download instructions here.   The petition will be presented to Mayor Campana and members of the City Council.

2. Sign up to be an advocate at www.buildlouder.org  and forward email action alerts to your friends and family.

Educate - You can help your community understand the facts about the need for affordable housing!

1. Post the "Did You Know?" Flyer at your business, church, or school in prominent spots.  Download it here.

2. Attend a screening of a documentary about Community Revitalization - details will be available soon!

Support - Building Community Week is a great opportunity to raise funds for affordable housing!

1. Be creative - host a dress down day at your office, sell baked goods, or wash cars.  Fundraisers not only raise money, but also help educate volunteers, supporters, and the general public about affordable shelter.

    Did You Know?

    About 95 million people, one third of the nation, have housing problems including a high-cost burden, overcrowding, poor quality shelter and homelessness. (NLIHC: 2004)


    10,000 children between the ages of 4 and 9 are hospitalized for asthma attacks each year because of cockroach infestation at home; and more than 180 children die each year in house fires attributable to faulty electrical heating and electrical equipment. (Sandel, et al: 1999)


    There is not a single county in the country where a full-time minimum wage worker can afford even a one-bedroom apartment at what HUD determines to be the Fair Market Rent. (NLIHC: 2006)
